This incredible novel is a fictionalized account of the “Trunk Murderess” Winnie Ruth Judd, who was accused of murdering two female friends in Phoenix AZ in 1931. Winnie is worth looking up if you’ve not heard of her.
*
*
In the novel, Winnie is Marion Seeley, a young woman caught up in the underworld dealings of two women who befriend her, Louise and Ginny, both loosely based on Winnie’s actual friends.
*
*
Marion is alone in a strange town as her much-older husband, a drug-addicted former doctor, has gone to work in Mexico where his lack of license doesn’t much matter. While he’s away, Marion begins a descent into the dark world of Depression-era prostitution and drugs, her life spiraling down until she is faced with impossible horrors.

The book weaves its spell from the first page and doesn’t let go. Brilliantly written and impossible to put down once you’ve started.
