This book absolutely drained me. It was at times, to be brutally honest, like reliving my childhood and youth. For me, a great part of this book could have come from my own teenaged diary. By the end, I was emotionally and spiritually exhausted. And I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Eileen is the main character, telling a tale set in the year I was born, 1964, but telling it from the viewpoint of today. She lives with her alcoholic ex-cop father in fairly squalid conditions. She works at a nearby juvenile detention facility.

Rebecca Saint John is hired as a counselor at the detention facility, and Eileen soon enters into a friendship with her. The cover blurb calls their friendship Hitchcockian, and that’s pretty dead on.

I won’t give away any spoilers, but this is one hell of a good read.
