I’m giving this a poor review because, frankly, I’m finding myself wanting to throw the book at the nearest wall. Or the nearest trash receptacle.

This is a rambling take on the plight of poor imprisoned Manson killers Krenwinkel and Van Houten, with a healthy dose of Watkins and Atkins thrown in for good measure.

The author befriended Pat Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten and used this as a jumping-off place to spout endless special pleading on the killers’ behalf. There are entire chapters devoted to the probable (!) lack of empathy the killers displayed, and the many reasons they lacked empathy in 1969.

Debra Tate, tireless advocate for her sister, for the LaBiancas, for all of the victims of those 2 bloody nights 50 years ago, is portrayed as nothing more than a vicious woman out to destroy the rights of poor prisoners everywhere. How dare she demand that violent criminals be subjected to more stringent rules than nonviolent ones?

Avoid this book if you have any feelings for Sharon, Abigail, Rosemary, Jay, Steven, Voytek or Leno. If on the other hand you simply adore Manson’s girls, go buy it immediately.
