I’m honestly not sure what I just read. No joke. I loved this book, though, and I do recommend it quite highly. I just had a difficult time getting past some seriously pretentious writing that may or may not have been intended as irony.

Samantha Mackey has enrolled in a graduate writing course at a prestigious East Coast university. There, she meets and becomes enthralled (literally and figuratively) by a group of women (also in the writing course) who call each other Bunny. Samantha and her best friend Ava mock these women and their Stepford-esque ways.
🐇
🐇
🐇
All of that is fine and good. The very white-girls-of-Pinterest vibes given off by the Bunnys is mysterious and creepy. But then things become rapidly and extremely surreal and haunting, not to mention downright gory.

Excellent writing (I think?) and truly brilliant characterization make this book worth the read. Fans of films like #Hereditary or #Midsommar will love it. However, #triggerwarning #animalabuse. Or maybe not abuse so much as the very weird use of animals? Regardless, be aware.

This book is an absolute delight, and the only tiny quibble I have with it is that the ending seems rushed. The rest is sheer perfection.
📚
📚
📚
Nina Lee Hill is the only child of a non apologetic wanderer named Candice, who basically abandoned her as a toddler in order to travel the world unencumbered. Nina is raised by a nanny whom she adores. Nina doesn’t have a clue who her father was.
📚
📚
📚
One day, disrupting Nina’s everyday fully structured life, a lawyer arrives to inform her of her father’s death, and of the existence of a vast family. Nina lives her life abiding by her strictly scheduled day-planner. That, needless to say, goes out the window.
📚
📚
📚
Through many and varied adventures, Nina comes to know this extended family, and even picks up a boyfriend along the way. The book has been compared to #BridgetJones but in my opinion it far surpasses the earlier work, similar only insofar as the daily diary entries. I simply loved this book.

Rowan is the new nanny at Heatherbrae House in a remote part of Scotland. Four previous nannies had given notice because they all swore the house was haunted. It becomes evident at the outset that Rowan is an unreliable narrator.
🔊
🔊
🔊
The book opens with a series of pleading letters to a Mr Wrexham from Rowan, who is in prison, having been convicted of murdering one of the 4 kids in her charge at Heatherbrae. Mr Wrexham is a lawyer, and Rowan wants his help proving her innocence.
🔊
🔊
🔊
Rowan’s charges, the children of Sandra and Bill Elincourt, are all girls, ranging from Petra at 18 months, through Ellie at 5, Maddie at 8, and Rhiannon at 14. Rowan soon discovers that Maddie has distinctly psychopathic tendencies. She also begins hearing noises throughout the house, which is a “smart house” outfitted with all the mod-con technology.
🔊
🔊
🔊
The book is replete with every haunted-house trope (which I loved!), from disembodied footsteps to the hunky caretaker who may or may not be sketch as heck. I’m posting this amid books/movies it reminded me of, such as #TheTurnoftheScrew, #ThePerfectNanny, #Rebecca, #TheHauntingofHillHouse and even a dash of #RosemarysBaby.

I wanted to like this book, I really really did. I wanted to LOVE this book. Alas, it was not to be.

This is a novelization of the story of #LizzieBorden, the woman who, in 1892, was acquitted of the gruesome ax murders of her father and stepmother in #FallRiver #MA.
🔊
🔊
🔊
It’s very very well-written, I’ll give it that. The prose is dense and hypnotic, filled with rich imagery. And it’s that very imagery that finally made me put the book down for good. #DNF because if I had to read the words “saliva,” “drool,” or “skin” one more time, or if I had to read intensely descriptive sentences about mouths and foul breath and vomit and rotting things, I was going to be sick. This is a sticky, sticky read. No thanks. I’ll stick to the nonfiction about the Borden case instead.

An absolutely perfect end-of-summer read that is so full of twists and turns it’ll leave you dizzy.
☀ïļ

Avery Greer is a year-round resident of the town of Littleport, ME. She’s a former bad girl whose name still causes people to twitch a bit, but she has since grown into a respected property manager for the wealthy Loman family.
☀ïļ
☀ïļ
☀ïļ
The novel centers around the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Avery’s best friend, Sadie Loman. Was Sadie’s death the night of the annual end-of-summer blowout party actually a suicide, as the official reports say? Or is there a hidden and dark underbelly to Littleport?
☀ïļ
☀ïļ
☀ïļ
Richly and cleverly plotted, you won’t know who to trust in this intricate and ultimately satisfying novel. Headed somewhere for a late vacay? Pack this book! (Another reason to give it a shot, it’s the current pick of @reesesbookclub @hellosunshine)

I’m giving this a poor review because, frankly, I’m finding myself wanting to throw the book at the nearest wall. Or the nearest trash receptacle.
*
*
*
This is a rambling take on the plight of poor imprisoned Manson killers Krenwinkel and Van Houten, with a healthy dose of Watkins and Atkins thrown in for good measure.
*
*
*
The author befriended Pat Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten and used this as a jumping-off place to spout endless special pleading on the killers’ behalf. There are entire chapters devoted to the probable (!) lack of empathy the killers displayed, and the many reasons they lacked empathy in 1969.
*
*
*
Debra Tate, tireless advocate for her sister, for the LaBiancas, for all of the victims of those 2 bloody nights 50 years ago, is portrayed as nothing more than a vicious woman out to destroy the rights of poor prisoners everywhere. How dare she demand that violent criminals be subjected to more stringent rules than nonviolent ones?
*
*
*
Avoid this book if you have any feelings for Sharon, Abigail, Rosemary, Jay, Steven, Voytek or Leno. If on the other hand you simply adore Manson’s girls, go buy it immediately.

I would give this a gazillion ðŸĩs if I could. This is one HELL of a ride.

Jules moves into a venerable old apartment building across from Central Park. The Bartholomew comes complete with gargoyles and plenty of moneyed charm. She is there to be a “temporary resident,” or an apartment sitter, paid handsomely to live in unoccupied apartments to preserve their cleanliness and air of being occupied.
🗝
🗝
🗝
In a slow, slow burn of suspense, it becomes apparent that the Bartholomew isn’t all it seems to be, and the moneyed residents aren’t quite what they appear to be either. Jules’ fellow apartment sitter, Ingrid, goes missing, and Jules begins a frantic search to find out what happened.

The book, the second I’ve read by Riley Sager but his third published work, is packed with twists and turns worthy of #RosemarysBaby by #IraLevin. I can’t recommend highly enough.
